Rankism In the News: Another Sexual Abuse Scandal?

According to the Huffington Post, “The former chairman of one of Egypt’s major banks has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing a maid at a Manhattan hotel, just weeks after the arrest of former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn on similar allegations.”

You may remember the media flurry over DSK’s indiscretions — read, horrible rankist abuses of power — from earlier this month. “Strauss-Kahn quit as the leader of the International Monetary Fund,” HuffPost reminds us, “on May 18 after he was charged with sexually assaulting a maid at a different city hotel. He has denied the allegations, but is under house arrest as he awaits trial.”

But back to our Egyptian friend. “[Mahmoud Abdel Salam Omar, a] 74-year-old businessman is accused of sexually abusing the maid and holding her against her will inside his hotel room” on Sunday night.

Talk about rankism in action.

When I took a glance of the above photo at the Dignity Movement page’s link, I thought that I was about to witness a kind of honorific celebration; for the visage of the above person seemed to be exuding honor and reverence. But once again, I should keep in mind well the fact that not all glittering is gold.
I really feel ashamed. But I wondered whether the prime source of disgrace overwhelming me is the act of the sexual assault itself, or the act of besmearing the Egyptian reputation at hand, and the religion Islam at the other. I can’t deny the shock I had upon knowing his nationality and religion, which dominates my mind, covering for a while the hideousness of the act itself. But, when my mind cleared, I began to regard the sick, rankist act in its context.
Frankly, I’ve no words to describe the impertinence of this act, or the sick-psyche of the perpetrator!
